Powder Fire Extinguishers – How do they work?
Fire Extinguishers have been filled with Dry Powder since 1818, when George William Manby filled the first copper vessel fire extinguisher with Potassium Carbonate (Dry Powder). They’ve moved on a bit since then but the principle of use has remained exactly the same. They come in various sizes, from 1kg all the way up to 12kg. They are fantastic all round fire extinguishers and can be used on Class A, B, and C fires, as well as being safe for use on fires involving electric. It’s no wonder they’re such popular extinguishers.
The dry powder contained in the extinguisher, when discharged, effectively smothers the fire, starving the fire of Oxygen. It’s that simple. However, there are some drawbacks with powder fire extinguishers that are worth mentioning. When discharged, the powder will create a mist cloud which can obscure visibility and is not pleasant to breathe in. It is also extremely messy and needs a thorough clean up after use. Probably the least of your worries, if you’ve successfully extinguished a fire with it though, it has to be said.
