Fire Extinguishers for HGV’s and Vehicles Carrying Dangerous Goods
It’s recommended that any commercial vehicle (vans, lorries, HGV’s) not carrying Dangerous Goods, should have a minimum of one 2Kg Dry Powder fire extinguisher. These extinguishers are able to tackle multiple types of fire; Class A (wood, paper, material), Class B (Flammable Liquids such as Petrol and Diesel) and Class C (Flammable Gas). They are the ideal choice for any commercial vehicle. A 2Kg or 3Kg ABC Dry Powder should be secured and stored in the cab.
For commercial vehicles carrying Dangerous Goods, there are rules set out in the CDG & ADR around the minimum amount of powder required to be carried based on vehicle mass. At time of writing the current regulations are as follows: Minimum of two fire Extinguishers.
Vehicle (max permissible mass) | Minimum dry powder fire extinguisher provision |
---|---|
Up to 3.5 tonne | 2kg for cab plus 2kg |
Over 3.5 t and up to 7.5 tonne | 2 kg for cab plus 6Kg (Total 8 Kg) |
Over 7.5 tonne | 2 kg for cab plus 9 Kg (Total 12 Kg) (one extinguisher must be a minimum of 6kg) |
Any vehicle carrying dangerous goods under the 'small load' limit or carrying only infectious substances - One 2 kg only. |
For Up to 3.5 t, this would be best achieved with a 2Kg Powder in the cab, and another 2kg powder stored securely elsewhere.
For 3.5 t – 7.5 t , this would be best achieved with a 2kg powder in the cab, and a 6kg powder stored elsewhere in an outer carrying box.
Over 7.5 t, the best combination would be a 3kg powder in the cab, and a 9kg powder stored elsewhere in an outer carrying box or cabinet.
