Lithium-ion batteries and Fire Risk

One fire risk which has become much more prevalent in recent years, are that of Lithium-ion batteries.  It’s no surprise with their increased use, not just in everyday items like mobile phones and laptops, but in electric vehicles, electric bikes and e-scooters. These items have become more popular and with increasing numbers now in the UK, it’s important to be aware of the fire risks that are associated with them.

What is the danger?

If Lithium-ion batteries are damaged, short circuited, overcharged or exposed to extreme temperature, they can overheat and create a chain reaction called ‘thermal runaway’. This chemical reaction produces more heat in the battery cells, driving the temperature higher, causing more cells to ignite.  Fires involving these batteries are very difficult to extinguish and will spread quickly.

What can you do to prevent fire involving lithium-ion batteries?

• Always use the manufacturers charging device
• Once charged, unplug the charger
• Do not charge items overnight
• Only purchase items that contain Lithium ion batteries from reputable sellers
