Fire Safety in the home this Christmas
Of all the things that spring to mind around the festive season, one thing that is not at the forefronts of our minds is fire safety! If we told you that more house fires happen during the Christmas period than any other time of the year, maybe it would be something worth taking more note of!
The most common causes of house fires around the festive period are cooking related, so watch that turkey! White goods are another major fire risk in the home. Avoid leaving them on when you’re out and never leave them on overnight. Overloaded sockets and Christmas trees too close to heat sources are other fire risks.
Christmas lights – we love them – but only buy from reputable stores and make sure they are certified with the British Kitemark. Switch them off overnight. Phones, Laptops, tablets can also heat up when in use or being charged. Charge them on a hard surface, using the official charger and never charge them overnight.
Make sure you have working
in your home, with a minimum of 1 on each floor and test them regularly. In the event of a fire at night, they will be your only warning. The more rooms you have them in, the earlier the detection, so do consider one in each room.
