Which Fire Extinguisher for my Taxi/Private Hire Vehicle?
There were 19,256 vehicle fires in England for the 12 months up to June 2023. Taxi/Private hire vehicles spend a lot of time on the road and so it makes sense to have a fire extinguisher in your PCV. Which fire extinguisher you need will vary depending on which regulatory authority you come under.
In England, Scotland & Wales, check with your local licencing authority, as the size, rating and type required can vary between authorities. For small PCV’s and small minibuses, a 2L AFF Foam or 2Kg Powder is the general recommendation. These can deal with Class B fires – essential in any vehicle related fire where flammable liquids, such as petrol may be involved.
In 2017, Northern Ireland made it a legal requirement to have a suitable foam fire Extinguisher in any taxi or PCV, with a minimum capacity of 2 Litres and a minimum fire Rating of 8A & 34B. It must also meet the manufacturing standards of BSEN3. Our 2L AFF Foam meets these minimum requirements and we ship to Northern Ireland!
